Arun Patel was born in Uganda (East Africa) in 1953. He contracted polio at the tender age of 1, leaving his right leg completely paralysed. At present both his legs are polio-ridden.
Arun recognised very early in his life that the only way to minimise the terrible burdens placed by this disease on those unfortunate enough to suffer from it, was a good sound education that would lead to a job which required minimum physical effort.
After initial schooling in Uganda he went to the UK in 1970 and qualified as a Chartered Accountant, being placed amongst the top 10 candidates. After having worked for KPMG, an international practice, he successfully built up his own professional practice from a zero base before selling it.
He decided to channel all his efforts into helping those unfortunate children from extremely poor economic backgrounds, who were struck by polio. He set up Polio Children, a UK and US registered charity with the help of his two brothers and many friends.
He is determined to ensure that the plight of polio victims is not overlooked as a result of the massive coverage given to the polio eradication programs.
Arun is married with two grown up sons.
